Veritas – New York City

20111106-162914.jpgHands down, the best part of my visits to see my son in Manhattan are our special dinners. Each visit we pick an off the charts wonderful place to dine. It’s usually something expensive that he most likely wouldn’t do on his own, I invite his two best friends from his first job in the city, and it’s my treat. I stay for nothing at his apartment so that we can spend the money on food and wine instead – and I’m sure that makes all the sense in the world to you foodies reading about this spot! This trip we we’re delighted with our dinner at Veritas, which was closed, remodeled, and reopened with a new chef.
20111106-162923.jpgDo you love an amuse bouche as much as I do? This one was a clear melon, squash, pomegranate soup that was really interesting and refreshing.
20111106-162933.jpgIt’s good when you have a group because you can order more things and share. And boy did we order! This appetizer was called beef in transition, and had a classic tartare, some seared filet, and short ribs inside a phyllo dough crust.
20111106-162942.jpgNext up, the crudo of the day with a salmon and a yellowtail over greens and an interesting citrusy sauce.
20111106-162954.jpgI usually don’t like to waste tummy space on salads at these type of dinners, but the waiter convinced us to order the spinach salad because it comes with Reyes Point blue cheese deviled eggs and crispy pancetta. He was right – this is NOT to be missed!
20111106-163003.jpgThen came the duo of bone marrow and lobster. Sounds a bit weird, tastes great!
20111106-163012.jpgWe actually all ordered individual entrees next, and that was probably overly ambitious. Mine was the maple syrup heritage breed pork. I loved it, but swapped with my son part way through for some of his incredibly tender veal chop.
20111106-163020.jpgSomebody in the group had dessert, but I was so stuffed by then I could barely manage a taste of the quince, chocolates, or macaroons the restaurant provides gratis at the end of your meal. Great evening – give this place a try next time you are in New York!
