Restaurant Roundup: The Populist

populist-prosciuttoI’ve been making great progress getting to my always growing list of restaurants to try in Denver, and it’s especially fun because I keep dragging different friends along. At this point I have made it to 8, and have 7 left on the list. Not bad for only 4 months! One thing I’ve noticed about most of them? They are in small, unique spaces, in up and coming neighborhoods that are gentrifying, and the food is creative and personal to the chefs. The Populist, about the only thing you might want to visit on this particular block in the Curtis Park neighborhood of Denver, offers a 7 course tasting menu that is only $75 for two. If you are thinking micro bites, you’re wrong – this is a very filling meal and a steal at this price. Each course is served on a single plate for the 2 of you to share, and the whole table must participate (to allow them to pace service for everyone). We were in, naturally, and our meal started with the prosciutto platter, complete with pickled mustard seeds that are a great accompaniment to the salty meat.populist-soup-garnishpopulist-soupThe creamy soup was poured over a piece of crispy bacon and some green onions tableside.populist-bacon-and-eggsThe menu calls this simply Bacon & Egg, but that would be a gross understatement. It’s actually a creamy, crispy bacon marmalade with a perfectly poached egg served with grilled ciabatta bread – and it’s insanely addictive.populist-saladThe salad was simple, but generous, and filled our need for some greens after that bacon and egg course.populist-palate-cleanserDon’t ask me to recall what the palate cleanser was, but I do recall enjoying it!populist-ravioliThe fave and chevre filled agnolotti with brown butter was probably my favorite dish, and I could have eaten a whole plate more.populist-fishSo imagine our surprise when this very large fish course showed up – honestly we had been counting the palate cleanser as one of the seven courses, and really struggled to fit this in.populist-dessertWell, struggled until the dessert came of course. My husband never passes up the sweets at the end!
