I was in New York recently, my visit timed to coincide with an exhibit at NYU featuring the drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, the Spanish artist and neuroscientist who won the Nobel Prize in 1906. His study of the brain under microscopic inspection, translated into drawings of the brain, provided the foundation for neuroscience as we know it today. The exhibit largely draws visitors from the medical community, I’m sure, but the hospital in Spain where my husband was treated in the neuro ICU for two months was named for Ramón y Cajal, so I was drawn to see his work. Many of the drawings were shown side by side with modern MRIs of the brain, which showed just how well he had interpreted and drawn what he saw under the microscope. I attended the exhibit with family and friends, and we had lunch at Maialino afterwards, where we toasted both Ramón y Cajal and my late husband Greg. Maialino’s Italian cuisine is firmly entrenched in the traditions of Rome, so I knew I’d love it – and the restaurants rendition on these classics was spot on. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves!
