The Windward Islands of the Caribbean

February 24, 2012  •  Caribbean, Travel

This is Part 2 in a 4-part series about my bareboat sailing adventure with three couples from St. Lucia to Grenada in the Caribbean. In this post I’ll share a photo journal of our trip with just a few words to orient you – enjoy!

Arriving in Marigot Bay, St. Lucia, with a late afternoon rainbow to welcome us as we board our boat.Sailing by the Pitons of St. Lucia, made famous by the Dr. Doolittle movie.Taking the dingy ashore at sunset in Soufriere, St. Lucia.Happiness is being on a relaxing vacation with your spouse. The first of the many sea turtles we saw all over this part of the Caribbean. The Blue Lagoon, St. VincentLate afternoon ritual of enjoying some champagne while watching the sun set over the Caribbean.Taking the helm to avoid sea sickness.Half tempted to stay behind on Bequia and set up a little restaurant like this.Just a few of the animals we saw on Bequia.
(We also watched the Super Bowl here at Papa’s Bar up on the hill.)The famous Basil’s Bar in Mustique – hosts of the annual musicfest that draws musicians (including Mick Jagger who was on the island when we were there) from all over the world.Classic brightly painted small boats of the Caribbean.Dinner and jazz music at Basil’s Bar.
Cute shops of Mustique.Gorgeous clipper ship at anchor.Practicing our silhouette photography each evening.Waiting out the rain on Union Island – wine and pizza make the wait easier. (Note: the only rain of any significance we had in 12 days was a few hours this one afternoon.)Happy to see the storm pass for Happy Hour in Petite St. Vincent. Our boat – moored in Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau for lunch.Sights of Mayreau. An expert kite surfer (going about 20 miles an hour) off the coast of Mayreau. One of the many hungry pups we saw throughout the islands – rest assured, we always shared our lunch.Jack’s Island – where they filmed the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The very gorgeous Tobago Cays – the best snorkeling of our trip and home to the Marine Park that protects the sea turtles. Our main man Walter in Tobago Cays – he brought us ice, baguettes, croissants, and his wife’s delicious freshly baked banana bread.Brightly painted shops of Clifton, on Union Island.Buying fresh vegetables from the very friendly Jenny in Clifton. When I told her my daughter’s name was Jenny also, she gave me an extra grapefruit.Happy Island – a man-made island built with cement and ALOT of conch shells – it’s basically an island bar/restaurant.Another gorgeous sunset – and one of the few large ships we saw all week.Vanessa’s Sun Beach Eat bar and restaurant in Chatham Bay, Union Island – where Tony Bourdain had rum punch and dinner on his No Reservations show.Vanessa’s chickens – soooo cute (I have a soft spot for chickens…perhaps because I know they produce my favorite breakfast.)The “bathroom” (outhouse) at Sun Beach Eat – frankly, the ocean seems a better choice.Classic Caribbean colors for the chairs in one restaurant. My new friend in Carriacou – I would have brought her home with me if I could have.Perfectly captured sunset behind the mast of a catamaran.Sharing a glass of bubbly with Troy, the local who helped us onto a mooring ball, while we put together our orders for dinner at his family’s restaurant in Carriacou.Long forgotten sailboat at anchor in Tyrrel Bay, Carriacou.Ending our trip at the beautiful yacht club in St. George’s, Grenada. The rested, and tanned, crew – taken by the Captain at St. George’s in Grenada on our final night.

Stay tuned for part 3, Eating My Way Through the Caribbean – St. Lucia to Grenada, coming soon!

Oh Michele….what a gift! I feel you’ve eased me into the weekend with these incredible photos. Really; the first one is beyond breathtaking. There is nothing more fun that really getting an eye to someone’s vacation. This looks like 2 weeks of paradise. Loved the grapefruit story and how tan and relaxed you all look in the group shot. Thanks so much for taking us along!

Looks amazing! Much prettier than Waikiki, I can’t complain haha

All the photos are beautiful but I have to admit I favor that “waiting out the rain” shot. Something about the lighting.
