There isn&#8217;t any quick way to arrive in Lecce. Either you fly from Rome, which means a trip to Fiumucino, a wait, a flight, and a train, or you simply settle into the &#8220;express&#8221; train (6 hours compared to the old nearly 8 hours) and enjoy your captivity. We read, we chatted, we slept, and we tried not to get too antsy, but by the time we arrived at 3pm, we were hungry. There&#8217;s not much open in the middle of the afternoon in Lecce, the baroque heart of Puglia, but thankfully we found a spot that serves the traditional frisa, </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We woke to another unseasonably warm, but thankfully sunny and gorgeous day in Rome. I always begin the first day with my groups with a tour of the Jewish Ghetto, primarily because most people don&#8217;t know the long history of what happened to the Jews in Italy. But since my daughter and friend hadn&#8217;t yet arrived thanks to a cancelled flight, I sent the group off with the lovely Inger to guide them while I waited for them at the hotel.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Travel isn&#8217;t always easy, and when you&#8217;re heading across country, then across the ocean to Europe, there are bound to be some snags. I hadn&#8217;t expected a flat out first flight cancelled and missed connection to Rome would be the start of my trip, however. So after arguing unsuccessfully with United to be placed on another carrier or route, I was force to buy a British Airways ticket, fly thru London, on to Rome, arriving 8 hours late to meet my tour group. My daughter and friend traveling with me had to spend the night in Washington and arrive this morning, a full day late.<br />
