Restaurant Roundup – Devil’s Food and Sushi Den

One of the reasons my husband and I moved into Denver proper after spending 20+ years in the suburbs where our kids were raised and went to school was to be closer to restaurants. For whatever reason, the suburbs around Denver are filled with all of the usual chain suspects, with only occasionally a creative fine dining place springing up here and there. We hated driving 30-45 minutes into town for a nice meal, so I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be minutes away from neighborhoods like South Pearl Street and South Gaylord Street. These neighborhoods each havea couple of blocks of restaurants and boutique shops, tucked right into the neighborhood. The lucky residents on Pearl St. can walk to Sushi Den, which is where I had this gorgeous sashimi platter for lunch recently. Sushi Den has been around for long before I can remember – they opened the first year after I moved to Colorado. And they offer consistently great sushi and fine Japanese cuisine. My only complaint is the long wait at dinner, so lunch is a better option in my opinion.
I also recently was introduced to Devils’ Food on South Gaylord, in the Washington Park neighborhood. Now this was a great new find. They have great coffees and baked goods up front, but also a restaurant on the side and to the back. And the food is not only really good, but it’s creative. My friend loved the shrimp and grits…
…and I was kind of blown away by how good this breakfast relleno was. No batter frying, just a fabulous roasted chile stuffed with eggs and goat cheese. Seriously great dish. I highly recommend this place for a visit if you haven’t been – and if you have, like me, don’t you think we should go back soon?

Sounds like a plan! First lunch at Sushi Den (always my daughter’s first pick) and the week after we will go to Devil’s Food.
