Individual Tarts

August 11, 2010  •  Desserts, Fruit, Tarts

I’ve been up to my elbows in flour and other ingredients, cooking with kids in my kitchen during these last few days of summer before they head back to school. For the moms, I know how anticipated that first day of school is, finally finding a few minutes to yourself to get something done without kids underfoot or demanding your attention. For me at this point in my life it’s a bit sad as that means no more weekly Cooking with Michele classes full of eager kids. I had planned to cook 4 recipes with the kids yesterday in my dessert class, but they had so much fun making their own confetti cupcakes with buttercream frosting that we barely had time to get the individual tarts finished to take home.I’m sharing this photo medley of their work with you for several reasons:

  1. This site contains a bunch of recipes for tarts – both savory and sweet – and maybe you never thought about doing individual ones. These small 4 inch nonstick pans make cute little tarts and are lovely when presented to your guests.
  2. In just a few more weeks we will be moving into apple season in some parts of the world, and my favorite all time tart is a classic apple tart with frangipane, topped with some butter and cinnamon sugar – that’s what the kids made yesterday.
  3. Mostly, I just want you to see the individual expression these 8-11 year olds demonstrated yesterday in designing their tarts. Each kid rolled out a small piece of flaky crust dough I had prepared, then pressed it into their own fluted tin. They spread a bit of the frangipane on the bottom of the dough while I quickly sliced their apple for them (which they had peeled). Then I let them at it. For those kids who wanted to see their work on my site, the numbers go across then down (left to right, 1,2,3,4 on the top row, 5,6,7,8 on the middle row, 9,10,11 and the group on the bottom row.
