I’ve spent the past few days at the BlogHer Food ’11 Conference in Atlanta (that’s a shot of the sunset over Atlanta from my window at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel), learning, gaining inspiration, meeting new people, reconnecting with others, and eating. And no foodie event – or any trip in my mind – is complete without a trip to the local market. The Sweet Auburn Curb Market in Atlanta was founded in 1918 and is a classic market combining stalls offering fresh produce, fish, meats, and more alongside cafes and spots to grab a bite. Here’s how you know you’re in the south.Greens of every type – mustard, collard, and more – for sale at most booths.Buy them in a bunch untouched, or ask the merchant to clean the greens from the stalks and bag them for you.Sweet potato cheesecake – for sale by the slice or in a whole cake, or offered up in samples for tasting.Pork for sale – by the piece, by the hog, smoked, cured, feet – you name it!Including some gorgeous bacon.Enormous shrimp – I mean the size of my fist……alongside crawfish just calling out for a seafood boil of some sort. But since it was lunchtime when we were shuttled in, the real draw was the Grindhouse Killer Burger shop at one end of the market.Nothing fancy going on here – just service with a smile……offering up the finest tasting burgers with hand ground meat and whatever toppings you want on it (with or without a bun, as I took mine). But the best way to know you are in the south, in Atlanta, in the spring, is that vidalia onions are in season. Fortunately Grindhouse offers them up as some of the best onion rings I’ve had in years. Hope I can fit into my jeans to fly home tomorrow!
