Morrison (or Morris) Mule

November 8, 2021  •  Beverages,

In the spring of 2018, I went on a bourbon tasting tour with friends. I wanted so badly to fall in love with bourbon, but I ended the 4 days of tastings with the same corkscrew face with every sip. Fast forward to 2019 when I fell for a man who loves bourbon. After sipping his old fashioned once I learned that I actually do love bourbon, just not neat, as it’s too hot and alcoholic for my tastes. Instead I like a cocktail and I like it cold. So when I read a recent Food & Wine article about bourbon cocktails, I decided to start a 26 week project of bourbon cocktails. Every Sunday night I’ll make one for my partner and myself and I’ll post them all here. The first one is inspired by Jim Morrison’s time spent in New Orleans, although I tweaked the recipe from F&W as theirs was too gingery for our tastes.

Recipe type: Cocktail
Serves: 2
Ingredients
  • 2 large ice cubes or balls
  • 6 ounces ginger beer
  • 4 to 5 ounces 100-proof bourbon (I like Knob Creek)
  • 1 ounce Aperol
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 2 strips of orange peel for garnish
Instructions
  1. Place the ice cubes in 2 glasses and divide the ginger between the 2 glasses. Combine the bourbon with the Aperl and lime juice and stir together. Pour evenly into the 2 glasses and stir each to combine the bourbon mixture with the ginger beer. Garnish with orange zest.
